Phillip Battle, USAPL Virginia Vice-chairman, meet director, accomplished Powerlifter and record and title holder with the USAPL, passed away on March 9th, 2008. He was 30 years old.

Phillip started competing as a teen in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the 90’s, attending and representing himself well on the state and national championship level. Always giving back to the sport, Phillip has been a fixture in everything Powerlifting in the Mid-Atlantic region for many years. directed meets in the Richmond Metro area for the last five years. He was quick with a kind word and excelled at rising above the philosophical differences and that so often divides our sport in order to bring people together.

Although his life was cut short, he was well on his way to becoming a driving force in USAPL Powerlifting. He was a state referee and was preparing for his national exam test this summer. As anyone who was involved with the Richmond Open could attest, he was steadily improving his meet directing skills and acquiring the equipment, facility and team to be able to bid for a national level event in the next couple years. He was also growing as a competitor, most recently preparing to move his squat PR further into the 700’s and his bench well into the 500’s. He was able to accomplish all of this while working full time as a fitness manager at the prestigious Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA and moonlighting as a fitness trainer with a local YMCA.

Phillip loved Powerlifting and was committed to the drug-free lifestyle. He was a dependable lifting partner and a loyal friend to all things iron. His presence in the Mid-Atlantic Powerlifting scene will be dearly missed by all those whose lives Phillip touched.
